this is really interesting to me from the perspective of disability theology – not that ugliness is a disability, but there is a lot of ableism (along with racism) that goes into determining what we consider ugly. Plus, some of the historical descriptions of Jesus quoted below from this wiki article are about him being weak and having potential physical deformities.
‘ The 2nd century anti-Christian philosopher Celsus wrote that Jesus was “ugly and small”[25] and similar descriptions are presented in a number of other sources as discussed extensively by Eisler,[26] who in turn often quotes from Dobschütz’ monumental Christusbilder.[27]
Tertullian states that Jesus’s outward form was despised, that he had
an ignoble appearance and the slander he suffered proved the ‘abject
condition’ of his body.[28] According to Irenaeus he was a weak and inglorious man[29] and in The Acts of Peter he is described as small and ugly to the ignorant.[26]:439 Andrew of Crete relates that Christ was bent or even crooked[26]:412 and in The Acts of John he is described as bald-headed and small with no good looks.[30]’
Jesus’s prediction that he would be taunted “Physician, heal yourself”[31]
may suggest that Jesus was indeed physically deformed (‘crooked’ or
hunch-backed) as claimed in the early Christian texts listed above.’
It’s not surprising that later theologians (as the above article goes on to describe) could not bear this “ugly” and potentially “deformed” Jesus – despite such a Jesus better fitting the biblical themes of God taking what humanity calls weak and showing it to be strength.
